A die hard student in combat arts, Leo Larsen has dedicated over two decades of his life to boxing and martial arts. With over 15 years of teaching experience, he has earned the respect of many in the San Francisco Bay Area as a top trainer and technical instructor of combat theory. Leo Larsen has taught at many industry leading gyms such as, LA boxing, UFC gym, Polk Street Boxing, Bay MMA & Fitness and has recently been known from his longstanding tenure and loyal years of service at Hit Fit SF.
Over the years Leo has developed a unique style and approach in teaching combat sports and is passionate toward his students on an individual basis. Breaking down technical movements and transposing them into basic concepts, is one of his many unique attributes. All training methods have come down through years of dedicated physical training, private lessons and apprenticeship under accomplished combat instructors and elite competitive fighters. A great deal of Leo’s development came about through his training at a private Gung Fu club, run and taught by founders Chris Suboreau (read bio below) Steve Magness and Michael Braten (read bio below) under the Gum Sahn Method of Kung Fu Training, where Leo obtained three Black Belt certificates. On September 25 of 2016, he was granted with the final degree of Full Instructor by the Gum Sahn founders, ranking him at the highest level.
Having also spent years training in MMA and Boxing Gyms, Leo had the privilege of training under many professional fighters such as MMA World Champion Jake Shields, Grappling Expert Mike Fazzino and Cus D’Amato boxer and veteran coach Jim Mongey. (Cus D’Amato developed the unique boxing style called the ‘Peek-A-Boo’, that produced World Champions such as Floyd Patterson, Jose Tores & Mike Tyson.)
In 2015 Leo Larsen was personally invited by Chris Suboreau to join The Visayan Eskrima Guild. The Guild was founded in 2008 by the the board of directors that consist of the following founding plank holders: Mike Braten, Steve Magness, Chirs Suboreau, Steve Van Manen, Keenan Williams, Wade Williams and George M. Yore; leading him on a new path as a student in the art of Eskrima. In 2016 Leo began privately training under Maestro George M. Yore, a highly respected martial artist, Eskrimador and author who published the book, “Sonny Umpad’s Eskrima, The Life and Teachings of a Filipino Martial Arts Master”. (Link for book)
Leo Larsen is registered and certified under USA Boxing (the national governing body for Olympic-style boxing) that is overseen by the United States Olympic Committee and the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
